14th NMRG Meeting in Heidelberg

The 14th NMRG meeting will be held in Heidelberg (Germany) on October 19 2003, the Sunday before the DSOM 2003 Workshop on Distributed Systems: Operations and Management held as well in Heidelberg. The meeting will start at 11:00. The chair of this meeting is Jürgen Schönwälder. The local host of this meeting is NEC Europe. Our contact is Marcus Brunner.

Meeting Place

The meeting will be held in the NEC offices in Heidelberg:

Network Laboratories NEC Europe Ltd.
Kurfürsten-Anlage 36
69115 Heidelberg
Germany

There is a web page which provides information how to reach the NEC facilities. Note: Attendees must ring the bell or call Marcus on his cell phone at +49 (0) 163 275 17 43 in order to get in.

Agenda:

  • 11:00 Welcome
  • 11:10 NEC Introduction and Overview of Ongoing Projects (Marcus Brunner)
  • 11:30 Measuring Network Traffic (Remco van de Meent)

This topic discusses the measurements Remco van de Meent has performed on some high speed access links of the dutch research net (SURnet), as well as the campus net of the University of Twente. An important goal of these measurements is to find simple dimensioning rules.

  • 12:30 Lunch
  • 13:30 SyncML Device Management (Radu State)

The SyncML initiative is a broadly supported effort towards universal data synchronization. Many device manufacturers and service providers have jointly proposed a standardized framework for device synchronization. In order to avoid multiple closed data formats and incompatible synchronization formats, a common data model (based on XML) and a synchronization protocol have been proposed by this forum. A distinct effort in this forum addresses the issue of device management. Based on the synchronization framework developed by the SyncML forum, a new device management standard, the SyncML DM (Device Management), emerged. We have developed an open-source agent toolkit built around the SyncML model and evaluated the performance and cost of this approach in the context of limited devices supposed to host management agents and can share this experience with the NMRG participants in Heidelberg.

  • 14:30 Coffee Break
  • 15:00 Performance of Web Services compared to traditional SNMP (Thomas Drevers)

In this topic we will discuss a web services (SOAP/WSDL) implementation that offers similar functionality as SNMP's IF-MIB. For retrieving data from the system, the implementation uses the same code as NET-SNMP. The performance of this implematation (CPU, memory, bandwidth) is compared to NET-SNMP.

  • 16:00 Coffee Break
  • 16:30 Session-based Security Model for SNMPv3 (Dave Perkins)

This topic discusses a new security model that is added to SNMPv3 that will allows usage of existing security infrastructure found on managed devices.

  • 17:30 Warp-up
  • 17:45 Meeting Ends
