The goal of this work is to implement the X-MAC protocol in the RIOT OS, verify the benefits of the protocol, and evaluate performance metrics and influencing factors. To verify the benefits, the evaluation performed by the X-MAC authors is reproduced and re-performed. The evaluation shows that the X-MAC protocol can reduce energy con- sumption, reduce latency per hop and increase transmission ratio. In addition, the X- MAC protocol is examined under the influence of different network topologies, network densities, packet rates, and communication patterns. This evaluates which factors have a strong influence on performance metrics of the X-MAC protocol. The results show that the influence of an increasing packet rate or network density, depending on the network topology and communication pattern, can become so large that an application of the X- MAC protocol may no longer be worthwhile. |
