Our Research and teaching activities are centered around operating systems : From hardware over system software up to languages and compilers with a focus on constructive methods for the design and development of adaptable and versatile system software. The group is led by Prof. Christian Dietrich.
Our paper, The New Costs of Physical Memory Fragmentation, won the Best Paper Award at the DIMES Workshop, co-located with the renowned SOSP'24 conference. Alexander Halbuer (LUH) presented our research, where we explore methods for energy savings in modern server systems by selectively powering down unused memory blocks. The study reveals that, while the operating system can effectively minimize fragmentation up to huge page sizes, it faces challenges with larger memory blocks. We also discuss the costs of memory in the cloud and advocate for more fine-grained price models. This work is part of the DFG-funded ParPerOS project.

Christian Dietrich presented the paper Cloud-Native Database Systems and Unikernels: Reimagining OS Abstractions for Modern Hardware [Vision] at the high-ranking VLDB 2024 conference in Guangzhou, China. The paper discusses the use of specialized OS kernels, particularly unikernels, in cloud-native database systems. The paper examines how unikernels, with their simplified architecture and direct hardware access, can improve DBMS performance. It also explores opportunities for revisiting traditional APIs, opening the way for co-designed, high-performance systems.
